What is the Janka Hardness Scale?
The Janka Hardness Scale is used to determine the hardness of wood surfaces and their suitability as flooring.
The test measures the force required to embed a .444 inch steel ball into wood to half its diameter (.222 inch). This results in an indentation 100 square millimeters in size. It is one of the best measures of hardness and durability of wood species.
It is important to remember that just because a wood species is rated higher, does not mean that if used as flooring it will not dent or scratch. All wood products will dent or scratch. This test helps to evaluate how much force it may take to dent or scratch a wood surface.

Generally speaking, the heavier the wood, the harder it is. The hardness of the wood should only be one factor when considering a floor; how a particular floor is finished is also crucial when it comes to durability.
Again, it is important to remember that all floors will dent, scratch, or gouge with enough force. However, with today’s new production advances, prefinished wood floors are much more durable and resilient than ever before!
Engineered vs Solid: What’s the difference?
Engineered
- An engineered wood floor is constructed from layers of both hardwood and plywood.
- Engineered hardwood can be installed on any level in your home and offers a variety of species, finishes and wider width options.
- When other floors will begin to look tired and worn, your hardwood floors will still look beautiful.
- Engineered wood ranges from 3”-12” wide and available in longer lengths, up to 8′, covering 12+ species. Engineered wood is also available with waterproof construction to fit your household needs.
Solid
- A solid hardwood floor is a solid piece of wood with no layers.
- Offered in a variety of species widths and finishes, solid hardwood can be installed on grade and above on a plywood subfloor.
- If you’re looking to renovate your residential or commercial space, solid hardwood flooring is a reliable and attractive choice.
- Offerings in solid wood range from 2 ¼” through 5” widths in 10 species.
